What is the meaning of Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient art and a science that originated in China over 3000 years ago. The meaning of Feng is “wind”, and Shui means “water”. As per Chinese culture, water and wind represent good health. Thus, good fortune comes from good feng shui. Sometimes, it is also considered to be an art. This art of placement understands how objects and spaces around you create energy and affect your life. It teaches us how to harmonise and balance the energies in the available spaces at home, garden, or office.

While buying Feng Shui items we often get confused about what to buy and what not to. No one would like to overdo a lot of Feng Shui items and make your home clutter and gives a superstitious appearance to your guests. Bringing harmony at home means firstly it has to be clutter-free.

Here are a few cool Feng Shui tips & guidelines which will not only bring good luck but shall enhance your home’s persona –

Chinese Crystal ball

Main door: The main door should be the largest in the home and the door should not open into a kitchen area. Also, the position of the main door is critical and would vary depending upon the direction and axis of the plot, however, doors right on the cardinal directions are considered bad positioning.

A Feng Shui cure for the main door should be hanging wind chimes, golden Chinese coins or Feng Shui bells. Feng Shui Chinese coins attract money according to the Feng Shui masters. Sometimes, we have to keep show racks, desk, bed, etc. in line with the main door due to space issue. This can create a blockage. You can correct this by hanging a white crustal ball with red thread in between the door and the obstacles.

Wind Chime
Door Mat

Door Mat: Don’t forget to make the entry path clutter-free. Select pleasant pastel colours or light colours for the entry room decorating a doormat that matches the room.

Fountain: In Feng Shui, water represents wealth. Many people do not have any idea about what is the best place to place the Feng Shui fountain is. The principles of Feng Shui for a happy home believe that it is more beneficial when the fountain is near the main entrance of your home. It could either be placed outside or inside your home, but the water should flow towards the centre of the house which is very important. So just like this water, opportunities will flow into your life.

Mirror: Now a day, most of our entry room is the drawing cum dining room. Please consider hanging a nice mirror there. It will represent your capacity to hold wealth. Please ensure that the mirror must reflect things you would want more such as natural light, beautiful view, green plant etc.

Living room: This room is the sanctuary for relaxation. Feng Shui master says that the centre portion of the house is not conducive for major activities as it receives the least amount of cosmic energy, hence it is beneficial if a major portion of the living room occupies the central zone of the building. Remember to position your sofas and heavy furniture’s such that they occupy the South and West sectors of the room and avoid furniture or blockages at the Northeast sector of the room which is the knowledge sector. The living room is the place where our guest, family member all gathers. So we must pay extra attention to let the qi flow well and in a welcoming manner.

Clock: A round metal clock hanging on eye level next to the door facing window would surely increase energy flow.

Wall Clock

Wall Art: A beautiful piece of painting not only can be appreciated by your guest but can also increase positive Chi into your living area. Keeping family photos on the east side of your living room stimulates health while nature photos on the south wall can bring fame.

Buddha Statue & Diffuser

Buddha Statute & Diffuser: Buddha statue or any other spiritual statute along with an aromatic diffuser in your northeast corner will bring contentment and serenity.

Master bedroom: This is one of the cosiest rooms in a home. It is said that deep sleep is when we reunite with the source, hence if we sleep deeply we awaken refreshed ready for the new day. Quality of sleep is far more important than duration. Certain locations are more conducive to peaceful sleep than others. Using a wooden bed/cot is preferred as wood is benign and warm as against metal beds, which are cold and oppressive, and metal is said to be associated with the planet Saturn.
Crystal Lotus

Crystal Lotus: Keeping a beautiful crystal lotus flower will not only increase the beauty of your bedroom but will bring harmony to your family and shall prevent quarrels.

Wall Décor: Nothing can be more warming than a framed family photo or beautiful scenery in your bedroom. Just keep in mind that there’s no room for mirrors in the bedroom. While mirrors can flow positive chi in the kitchen or the living room the same can create negative energy while you are trying to sleep. If at all, due to space crunch you need to keep the mirror in the bedroom always cover it while not in use.

Under the bed: This is a crucial place and many people use this place as storage which is a big No in good Feng Shui. But now you can’t just throw away your newly brought storage bed right, well keep soft beddings, blankets inside of it. Heavy stuff under your bed will only increase heaviness in life and interrupt your sleep.

Side Table: A round wooden nightstand is good support to increase wood element in the bedroom. It is handy too for keeping your water jug or medicine.

Color: Warm brown or yellow are the best for the bedroom to increase the Earth element.

Kitchen: What we eat, where we eat and how we eat are all part of the science of health and vitality; so kitchen location is vital to the overall harmony of the home. The kitchen has many elements that can operate in balance or could be conflicting like Water, fire (stove /electricity), Metal (utensils) etc. In addition, locating the stove and sink is important so having the water body away from the fire is quite important.

Light: If your kitchen area is small then avoid fluorescent lights and try LED lights. You can observe the shift in energy associated with these two different lights.

Colour: If you’re looking to assimilate colour into your space, then getting a bowl of fruits for the countertop is an excellent Feng Shui cure. Apart from providing you and your loved ones with the necessary nutrients, the fruit is a representation of wealth and health. Especially, if it’s winter then it is recommended to keep 9 oranges in the kitchen or in the living room. Citrus fruits can ward off bad luck.

Please do not keep stale fruits for a long time. Throw them right away from your kitchen rather than throw all stale foods from your home. These are a source of negative energies. I mean no point keeping stales things when you can’t eat them right!

Mirror: In Feng Shui, more stove burners represents more opportunities and sources of wealth. This will bring more prosperity and success to your career. Hey, no need to run to the market for a new burner a mirror can serve the purpose. Just hang a mirror or mirrored object right opposite your stove to double the number of burners with a reflection! Easy right and decorative too.

Plants on the Kitchen Cabinets: Go to your kitchen and if you find empty spaces above the kitchen cabinets, then it attracts dust, and the whole energy is stagnant. So you can place some green plants and lighting! The plants could be live or very realistic. You could also place some beautiful or meaningful objects, thus bringing life to that area transforming the entire energy.

Toilets: In the earlier days the toilets were away from the main house but now they are made ‘en-suite’ or attached. Toilets should not be too close to the kitchen as the food energy and toilet energies are incompatible.

Clean & Tidy: Clean your bathroom daily.              .

Closed door: Keep the bathroom door always closed

Closed seat: Keep the toilet seat closed

Mirror: It is better to place the mirror outside of your bathroom

Plant: Air purifying plants can be kept inside the bathroom to neutralize the drowning energy flow.

Though the use of these Feng Shui items are quite common, they are by no means the game-changer to your home’s Feng Shui. In other words, your home’s Feng Shui will not make a 360 degree turn from bad to good just by buying and placing some of these items.
To understand how these items work and how Feng Shui can help you in general, you’ll need to understand the concept of correlative thinking, which Feng Shui Master Howard Choy has explained in detail

“People say that if you put it (Three-Legged Frog) in your entry lobby, it will bring wealth for you. Does that mean you don’t have to work? Do you think you can just sit around and someone will come along and give you money, like the coins that are in the frog’s mouth? The frog is a symbol for begetting wealth. It won’t acquire wealth for us!”
